How to password-protect a file transfer

In short

On the Pro and Max plans, open the transfer options, go to Protection and type a password before creating the link. The recipient must enter it to receive the files. The password itself is never sent to us or to the recipient, and the transfer locks after 5 wrong attempts.

Step by step

  1. Open the options

Before creating the link, open the transfer options and pick the Protection tab.

  2. Set a password

Type a password, and turn on enhanced encryption for a second layer of protection.

  3. Share separately

Send the link one way and the password another way, for example by email and by text message.

How the password is checked

The password never travels over the network. Each browser transforms it slowly and irreversibly (with PBKDF2), then the two browsers check that they get the same result. With enhanced encryption turned on, the password is also part of the encryption key, so without it the data is unreadable.

After 5 wrong attempts, the transfer locks and the sender has to create a new one.

Choosing a good password

Use a few unrelated words or a long phrase rather than a short word with symbols. It only needs to be good enough for the time the link is open, and easy for your recipient to type.

Which plans include password protection?

Pro and Max.

Can ShareUrFiles recover a forgotten transfer password?

No, we never know it. Create a new transfer with a new password.

What is enhanced encryption?

A second layer of encryption applied to each piece of the file, on top of the already encrypted connection, with a key only the two browsers know.
